More Rogue Security Software For the Mac

Posted by Security Watch - March 26, 2008 on 3:25 pm | In PCMag Security | We've seen fake codecs on the Mac and there has been a rise in other types of malware for it, but Trend Micro is reporting a new variant of a fake security program called iMunizator. They call such software "scareware" because it tries to scare the user into believing there is a problem that needs to be solved and hey, we've got a convenient solution right here. The attack resembles a previous Mac Attack called MacSweeper. Clearly it's a new variation of that attack. Trend says this resembles a previous attack known as Zlob/MediaCodec which crossed over from Windows to the Mac. It all points to increasing interest in the Mac from the malware crowd. Whether it amounts to a big deal is yet to be seen.
